History

The company was founded in 1972 by Phil Sanders under the name Truckstops of America. In the same year, the company was acquired by Ryder Corporation. The company then changed ownership in the 1980s and 1990s. In 1984, Truckstops of America was acquired by Standard Oil of Ohio (owned by BP since 1987). BP, in turn, in 1993 sold the company The Clipper Group. In 1997, the Truckstops of America network merged with the National Auto / Truck Stops chain, increasing the network immediately by 112 truck stops. Then the company changed its name for TravelCenters of America for marketing reasons. From this moment on, there is an active policy to increase the network and improve the quality of staff. If in 1972 there were six trail stops, then in 1993 - 48, in 1998-146, and in 2014 - 249.

In 1997, TravelCenters of America bought the first national Union-76 track-stop chain, closing or selling most of the track-stops with the old infrastructure. In 1998, the company acquired several small chain stores. On August 25, 1998, the company announced the acquisition of 19 Burns Bros. Travel Stops of which two were immediately closed.

In the early 2000s, the company acquired 16 points of Travel Ports network in the eastern United States. In the early 2000s, TravelCenters of America acquired a truck stop in Canada, in the city of Woodstock, in the southwest of Ontario , on the Ontario Highway 401 , and thus became international. At that time, it was the only truck stop outside the United States.

On May 31, 2007, TravelCenters of America acquired competitors Petro Stopping Centers. Trac stops were also purchased from the competitor Pilot Travel Centers Pilot Flying J.

On October 4, 2007, Land Line Magazine announced that the company would spend $ 135 million to upgrade its truck stops. The work was planned to be completed by the end of 2008.
