Biography
Born on August 1 ( September 1 ), 1906 in Tallinn . After graduating from school from 1922 to 1926 he studied at the Tallinn State School of Industrial Art. In 1926–1933, he studied in Tartu at the Pallas Higher Art School under Ado Wabbe [1] . Together with him in the art school studied artists K. Liimand , A. Bach, N. Kummits, H. Mugasto, who, like Johani, were leftist supporters. He actively participated in art exhibitions both in Estonia and abroad [2] .
After the start of World War II, he took part in the defense of Tartu. He was captured and executed by the Nazis on August 18, 1941 near Tartu [3] [4] .
Creativity
The artist's manner can be described as “poetic realism”; this trend was popular throughout the world in the 1930s [2] . It is also referred to as representatives of the democratic trend in Estonian fine arts [1] . The work of Johani was influenced by the Belgian realists [5] . He wrote a number of genre, historical compositions, portraits and landscapes [1] . The main theme of his work was a poor urban outskirts. In the late 1930s, he began to write more complex crowd scenes [2] . Among his works are “The Ironing Clothes” (1932, Tartu Art Museum ), “Portrait of the Artist's Father” (1940, Tallinn Art Museum ) [1] . The last work of Johani was the painting “The Rise of the Workers on June 21, 1940 in Tartu” (1941, Tartu Art Museum) - this is the first painting on the theme of revolution in Estonian painting [6] .

Wife: Helena Alexandrovna Johani (1903–1999) - library scientist, teacher, director of the State Library of the Estonian SSR .
Memory
A street on the outskirts of Tartu is named after Andrus Johani.
