Taxonomy

For the first time a new species was scientifically described in 1967 as Breviraja simoterus [3] . The holotype is an adult male 94.1 cm long, caught in Hokkaido , Japan [4] . The specific epithet comes from the words ancient-Greek. σῑμός - “snub-nosed” and lat. teres - "polished".

Area

These rays inhabit the northwestern Pacific Ocean in the waters of Japan. They are found at a depth of 96 to 540 m [2] .

Description

Wide and flat pectoral fins of these rays form a rhombic disk with a wide triangular snout and rounded edges. Behind the eyes are sprinklers . On the ventral side of the disc are 5 gill slits, nostrils and mouth. Lateral folds lie on the tail. These rays have 2 reduced dorsal fins and a reduced tail fin [1] .

The distance between the dorsal fins is 0.5–1% of the body length, the number of vertebrae in the prekadual section is 41–90. The number of spikes forming the median caudal series is 22-28. Compared to the Bathyraja pantera , these skates have an anterior body shorter and narrower, a tail shorter, and a mouth width of 8.1–9.1% [5] . The maximum recorded length is 101 cm [2] .

Biology

Embryos feed exclusively on yolk . These rays lay eggs enclosed in a horn capsule with hard “horns” at the ends [2] . The capsule is about 12 cm long and 9 cm wide [3] .

Human interaction

These stingrays are not targeted, they can be caught as by- catch . The International Union for Conservation of Nature has not yet appreciated the conservation status of the species.
