Activities
James Boyle graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1980 and subsequently attended Harvard Law School . Since July 2000, he has been a professor at Duke University Law School, and before that he taught at the American University , Yale and Harvard Law Schools , and the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
James Boyle is one of the founders and former chairman of Creative Commons [1] [2] [3] . He is also a co-founder of Science Commons , an organization aimed at expanding the activities of Creative Commons in the dissemination of scientific, technical data and facilitating access to educational resources [4] .
Boyle is the author of several literary works, such as Shamans, Software and Spleens: Law and Construction of the Information Society, and The Shakespeare Chronicles , published under the Creative Commons license [5] [6] .
In 2006, published the comic strip Bound by Law? Tales from the Public Domain ”dedicated to intellectual property and public domain laws [7] [8] [9] . The comic tells the story of the female director Akiko, who overcomes the difficulties associated with the application of the fair use principle in the process of working on a documentary. Illustrations include collages from famous works, as well as images created especially for comics [10] .
In his most recent work on intellectual property issues, The Public Domain: Enclosing the Commons of the Mind , Boyle argues that the current copyright system does not fulfill its original mission: to reward and promote creativity. [11] This book has also been published under the Creative Commons Nonprofit License [12] .
Boyle is a columnist for the Financial Times .
Rewards
In 2003, the James Boyle was awarded the World Technology Award in Law. For his research in the development of the ideas of the public domain and the analysis of obstacles to this [13] [14] . In 2006, he received the Duke Bar Association Distinguished Teaching Award . In 2010, he received the EFF Pioneer Award .
