Biography
Born July 14, 1844 in the city of Pine Creek , Illinois, in the family of Samuel (1811-1890) and Sofia (1819-1883) Walkup ( English Samuel and Sophia Ruggles Walkup ).
He graduated from school in Ogle County , Illinois , and in 1862 he signed a contract for military service, participated in the Civil War . He fought in the 92nd Illinois Volunteer Regiment, was wounded, and in 1863 returned to civilian life in Illinois. Later he moved to Iowa , where in 1869 he married Phoebe C. Johnson (1849-1926) [1] , they had a daughter, Eva Alberta Walkup (1869-1872). In 1881, he returned with his family to Illinois, settling in Rockford .
He was engaged in invention. When an airbrush was invented in 1876 [2] , jeweler Ebner Peeler began to improve it. The development patent was then sold in 1882 to Walkapu. On May 6, 1884, Walcup patented a double-acting airbrush, which had the ability to separately control both the supply of paint and air (before that, the airbrush allowed adjusting the supply of paint with simultaneous air supply). This gave more opportunities when working with him.
In 1888, in the building of his Airbrush Manufacturing Airbrush Company , established in 1883, Liberty Walkup opened the Illinois School of Art, which taught painting and drawing using airbrush techniques. Interestingly, the American impressionist painter Wilson Irvine became a pioneer in the use of airbrushing in art.
At the end of his life, Walkup took up politics, ran for the Senate of Illinois, but did not get into it, taking fourth place.
Liberty Walkup died on October 19, 1922 , was buried in the cemetery of Mt. Zion Cemetery City of Mount Morris , Ogle County, Illinois. [3]
