Biography
Victor Zhegalov was born on May 1, 1898 in the village of Palekh of the Vyaznikovsky district of the Vladimir province . In 1908-1912 he was engaged in an icon painting workshop [1] . In 1913-1917 he studied at the icon-painting workshop of the Committee of Trusteeship in Palekh. Since 1928 he was in the Artel of Ancient Painting, where his teachers were I. M. Bakanov and A. V. Kotukhin [2] . Since 1932 he participated in art exhibitions. In 1933, his work was exhibited at an exhibition in London. In 1930-1935 he taught at the Palekh Art College. In Moscow in the 1930s, Viktor Zhegalov was engaged in the design of " Grocery Store No. 1 " on Gorky Street and the Tabak Pavilion at the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition . In 1937-1938 he was engaged in painting porcelain at the Dulevo Porcelain Factory [1] .
After the start of World War II, he went to the front. He died on October 13 [2] 1941 (according to other sources - October 14 [1] ) during the bombing of a train at the Lom station near Rybinsk . Other Palekh artists P. D. Bazhenov and V. M. Salabanov perished in the same echelon [2] [3] .
Creativity
Victor Zhegalov painted papier-mâché items, caskets, powder boxes, cigarette boxes, brooches. In his work there are both motifs of Russian literature and folklore, as well as modern Soviet themes: “The Firebird” (1928, Ivanovo OXM ), “The Red Army Man on the Horse” (1930, SPMZ ), “The Red Wagon ” (1931), “The Tale” about the fisherman and the fish ”(1933, version - plate, 1936, All-Russian Museum of A. S. Pushkin , Pushkin ),“ Partisans ”(1934, GMPI ),“ Hunting ”(1936, SPMZ),“ Stepan Razin ”( 1939) [1] .
