Personal life
Born in New Jersey [2] . She has Italian and Hungarian roots on her mother’s side, and her father is a representative of the Negroid race with a small part of Irish roots [3] . Halsey from her youth played the violin, as well as the guitar, starting from the age of 14 [4] . In one of the first interviews, she admitted that at the age of 17 she was diagnosed with bipolar affective disorder [5] , after a suicide attempt [6] . At 18, due to financial problems, the girl was on the street. She played acoustic concerts under different names, but, in the end, settled on Halsey, which is an anagram of her name (Ashley), as well as the name of the street in Brooklyn, where Ashley spent a lot of time when she was a teenager [7] . Initially, she planned to go to college at the faculty of fine arts, but could not afford it [8] .
Speaking about herself, she also used the term “tri-bi” earlier, which means biracial, bisexual and bipolar ( multiracial , bisexuality and BAR ) [9] , but later stopped using it [10] . He actively supports the LGBTQ community, which can be seen both in her work and in numerous statements and appeals regarding pressing social topics [11] .
Halsey became pregnant during a tour in support of the upcoming release of her debut album BADLANDS, but in July 2015, on the eve of Vevo LIFT, she had a miscarriage. Despite this, she still went on stage and gave a speech [12] . She attributed her busy schedule to the cause of a miscarriage, which she did not publicly report until 2016. In April 2018, Halsey froze her eggs because of the likelihood of infertility in the future due to the fight against endometriosis [13] .
Career
Early Creation
Before releasing Room 93 , Ashley recorded covers for various artists and uploaded them to YouTube . One of the most famous works of the girl is a cover of " I Knew You Were Trouble " Taylor Swift . She posted this entry on her Tumblr account [14] .
Room 93
According to Ashley herself, at a time when she was homeless and living with friends, one of the managers noticed her and asked her to record a song for advertising. In the same studio, Halsey also recorded Ghost, which became one of the singles from the mini-album Room 93, and also entered the album Badlands [15] . After this, Ashley began a partnership with Astralwerks . On October 27, 2014, the first EP Room 93 was released , consisting of five songs: “Hurricane”, “Ghost”, “Trouble”, “Empty Gold”, “Is There Somewhere” [16] . The album could not bring Halsy world fame, and the recognition of critics.
“Ghost” and “Hurricane” became singles and they released videos telling the story of a company of teenagers (“Hurricane”) and the story of a couple from this company (“Ghost”). The clips take place in a motel in room number 93. Also on the singer’s page there are two teasers for two more songs: “Trouble” and “Empty Gold”.
