Story

In June 1944, the landing of American troops on the island of Saipan began. All men, including civilians, were thrown into battle, women and children took refuge in caves. An employee of one company, Makimura, injured, takes refuge in a cave where his wife Atsuko was already. Here he learns that sergeant-major Harashima raped Atsuko. Anger and hatred seemed to freeze the soul of Makimura, he becomes like a wild beast. But when a ship’s artillery shell hurts Harashima, whom he hates, Makimura forces his wife to look after him. The situation of the Japanese army becomes desperate, the Japanese are pushed to the northern tip of the island and die one after another. Makimura is trying to master the power of the girl he met on the battlefield, but her beauty strikes Makimura, and humanity returns to him again. July 7 comes the order that everyone should die so as not to be captured by the enemy. Women and children rush into the sea from Cape Mappi. The next day, the remaining men go to the last battle.
