Melodifestiválen 2016 is the 56th annual Swedish song contest in which Sweden selected her representative for Eurovision 2016 , which took place in Sweden itself . Leading the competition in 2016 were 8 people. One permanent presenter is Gina Diravi , and the remaining 7 people acted as co-hosts of the show and replaced each other at each stage of the competition.

Format
Compared to last year, the format of the festival has not changed. Also, 28 participants are divided into 4 semifinals. From each semi-finals, two best songs go directly to the finals. Songs that occupy 3rd and 4th places go to the "Second Chance". 12 songs participate in the final: eight passed directly from the semi-finals and four best songs from “Second Chance”. In the final, by means of a spectator vote and a vote of a professional international jury, the winner of the competition and the representative of Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 are determined.

Twenty-eight entries were announced during a press conference on November 30, 2015.
Among the authors of the competition songs are former Melodifestival winners Tommy Nilsson (1989) and Martin Stenmark (2005). Also, Krista Siegfrids participated in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013, where she represented Finland. Not a few participants who participated in the Melodifestivalen earlier: Ace Wilder, After Dark, Anna Buk, David Lindgren, Dolly Style, Isa, Linda Bengtzing, Matthias Andreasson, Molly Peterson Hammar, Molly Sanden, Oscar Zia, Panetoz, Patrick Isaksson, Pernilla Andersson and Victor, Swingfly, and Uno Svenningsson . In addition to that, Molly Sanden represented Sweden at the 2006 Junior Eurovision Song Contest.
On February 4, 2016, SVT held a press conference where it was announced that Anna Buck’s song “Himmel för två” written by Sven-Inge Sjöberg, Lennart Wastesson, Larry Forsberg and Camilla Läckberg was disqualified. The disqualification took place two days before the performance in the first semifinal, when it turned out that the song had previously participated in the stage of listening to the Moldavian national selection for Eurovision 2014 under the title “Taking Care of a Broken Heart” with the text in English.

Note: * Anna Buk’s song “Himmel för två” was disqualified on February 4 after a rehearsal video was posted on the Internet by SVT. Users noticed that this song, only in the English version, participated in the Moldovan selection for Eurovision 2014. This fact violates the competition rule that the song should not be released before September 1 of the previous year. As a result, the channel made a decision to disqualify the song, but the song took part in the semi-final itself, as a performance out of competition.

2nd semifinal
The semi-final was held on February 13 in Malmö , in the Malmö Arena . The lead of the semi-finals was Gina Dravi .
Initially, Charlotte Perelli was supposed to be the second lead, but due to the scandal that appeared before the start of the competition, she was removed from this role. Charlotte was not leading only officially, because she helped lead the show to Gina, and also performed in the interval act of the semifinal.

The semi-final was held on February 20 in Norrkoping at the Himmelstalundshallen arena. The lead of the semi-finals was Gina Diravi , and her with the lead Henrik Schyffert.
The semi-finals were opened by presenters Gina Diravy and Henrik Schyffert, they performed a cover of Queen and David Bowie's song “ Under Pressure ”. In the interval act was a stand-up comedian performance and a performance by Gina Diravi called “Love Story”.

Ratings
All six shows of the competition were broadcast live on SVT1 and SVT WORLD, and were also broadcast online through the SVT Play service. The shows were also broadcast on the radio at Sveriges Radio P4 with comments by Carolina Norén and Ronnie Ritterland. The final was also broadcast on SVT24, as well as using the SVT 360 mobile application, which allowed users to view the final in 360 degree format from the first row of the Frands Arena. International broadcasts of the contest were held in Iceland on RÚV , in Norway on NRK3 , as well as on Finnish Yle Fem 1.

Marcel Bezençon Award 2016
Marcel Bezençon Award - Award awarded annually at the end of the Melodifestivalen in three categories. Winners are determined by the press, songwriters, and Melodifestivalen winners. The award was established by Christer Bjorkman and Richard Herrey and was named after the founder of Eurovision.
Winners will be determined after the end of the competition.
Eurovision 2016
At the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 France scored 261 points and took 5th place.
