History

Ferdinando Ferfax, 2nd Lord Ferfax of Cameron (1584–1648)

Thomas Ferfax, 3rd Lord Ferfax of Cameron (1612–1671)

The king of England, Scotland and Ireland, Charles I Stewart, on October 18, 1627 created the title of Lord Ferfax for Sir Thomas Ferfax (1560-1640). He represented the English Queen Elizabeth Tudor during a series of diplomatic missions to the court of Scottish King James VI Stuart , and also sat in the House of Commons from Lincoln (1586), Oldborough (1588) and Yorkshire (1601-1625).

His son Ferdinand Ferfax, 2nd Lord Ferfax (1584–1648), and grandson, Thomas Ferfax, 3rd Lord Ferfax (1612–1671), were prominent military leaders during the Civil War in England , during which they fought on the side of Parliament against the king. Ferdinando Ferfax was a member of the House of Commons of England from Borobridge (1614–1629, 1640) and Yorkshire (1640–1648), and his son Thomas Ferfax sat in the House of Commons from Cirencester (1648) and was Lord of Maine (1651–1660). After the death of the latter in 1671, the title was inherited by his cousin, Henry Ferfax, 4th Lord Ferfax (1631–1688). He was the son of Rev. Henry Ferfax (1588–1665), the second son of the 1st Lord Ferfax. He sat in the House of Commons from Yorkshire. His son, Thomas Ferfax, 5th Lord Ferfax (1657–1710), represented the House of Commons of Malton (1685–1689) and Yorkshire (1689–1702, 1707).

He was succeeded by his son, Thomas Ferfax, 6th Lord Ferfax (1692-1781). He inherited large estates in the Virginia colony from his mother Catherine, daughter of Thomas Kolepeper, 2nd Baron Kolepeper , Governor of Virginia . In 1781, after his death, the title and American estates were received by his younger brother, Robert Ferfax, 7th Lord Ferfax (1707-1793). He represented Maidstone and Kent in the House of Commons. During the Revolutionary War, Ferfax estates were confiscated. He was succeeded by his second cousin, Brian Ferfax, 8th Lord Ferfax (1737–1802), who also lived in Virginia. He was the son of Colonel William Ferfax (1691-1757) and the grandson of the Rev. Hon. Henry Ferfax (1659-1708), the second son of the 4th Lord Ferfax.

His descendants lived in the United States for several generations and essentially forgot about their peers' title.
