Biography

Born in the family of the famous botanist Pyotr Stepanovich Shesterikov and teacher of foreign languages Louise Stepanovna Shesterikova. Sergei’s grandfather on the mother’s side was the Frenchman Etienne Lanteress, who found himself in Odessa in 1848 during the French Revolution . Sergey spent his childhood and youth in Odessa.

In 1922, Shesterikov created the first serious work - a bibliography of the works of N. S. Leskov, which became his main object of study for life. In 1923, Shesterikov began working at the Odessa Public Library, where his father took him from childhood. He enters into correspondence with the country's leading literary scholars: M. A. Tsyavlovsky , B. L. Modzalevsky . In 1924 it begins to print. In 1926, Shesterikov was called up for military service in the Red Army, and in the spring of that year the 30th volume of the Izvestia of the Department of Russian Language and Literature of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR was published, in which a bibliography of N. S. Leskov was published for his authorship. This work evokes enthusiastic responses from B. L. Modzalevsky, M. P. Alekseev , M. A. Tsyavlovsky, A. I. Beletsky . Upon his return from the army, Shesterikov went to the V. I. Lenin State Library of the USSR in Moscow, where he received copies of letters from N. S. Leskov to L. N. Tolstoy. The commentary issued by Shesterikov on these letters becomes classic [1] .

In 1928, Shesterikov moved to Leningrad, where a vacancy opened in the Pushkin House . He takes the position of technical assistant, and then receives a promotion to a researcher of the II category [2] . In 1929, he believes, as a result of intrigue, he is being reduced. Shesterikov remains in Leningrad and continues to be published in the publishing house "Academica" [1] .

On July 17, 1930, under the stipulation of N.V. Izmailov , who was arrested as part of the Academic Affair , Shesterikov was imprisoned. He is accused of participating in an organization allegedly created by historians S.F. Platonov and E.V. Tarle and sentenced to a death sentence, which was replaced with 10 years in the camps. He spends 7 years and 4 months on Solovki , works on logging, manages horses. These years forever change his worldview, he can no longer enjoy life. But even in conclusion, Shesterikov continues to compile a file of N. S. Leskov [1] .

Freed on November 22, 1937 and unable to live in central cities, Shesterikov settled in Saratov. in mid-June 1938 the police demanded that he leave the city. He decides to move to his native Odessa, but first, in violation of the regime, calls in to his sister in Moscow. Here he meets K.P. Bogaevskaya , his future wife, and V.D. Bonch-Bruevich , director of the State Literary Museum. Bonch-Bruevich attracts Shesterikov to work on volumes of the Chronicles dedicated to N. S. Leskov. He edits them already in Odessa [1] .

In March 1939, now the Odessa police forced Shesterikov to change his place of residence. He is moving to Mozhaisk . In January 1940, he filed for rehabilitation. But in the same year, the conditions of stay of convicted citizens change, and he can no longer be in Mozhaisk. The next place of residence becomes a quiet Zavidovo station in the Kalinin region. Here it is when German troops invade the USSR. Shesterikov wants to go to the front as a volunteer, but the call of convicts is prohibited. Everything changes after a few months: on September 15, Sherstobitov was mobilized and sent to the veterinary hospital [1] .

The further fate of Sergei Petrovich Shesterikov is little known. His name is found in the lists of those executed on November 6, 1941 by the verdict of the Military Tribunal of the Vologda city garrison [4] . According to some sources, he was posthumously rehabilitated [2] , but no official evidence of this was found [1] [5] .
