It originates on the northern slopes of the San Gabriel ridge, near the Angeles-Forest highway, on the territory of the Angeles national forest . Several upper reaches merge near the town of Acton into a single stream, which flows further west through the canyon of Soledad. Near the town of Canyon Country, the California Highway 14 crosses the river. The Sierra Pelon Range in the north is an additional catchment. In the area of Santa Clarita, the river receives tributaries of the Bouquet Creek, Placerita Creek and San Francisco Creek. The river bed in these places remains dry most of the year, with the exception of the time when heavy rainfall occurs. Next, the I-5 highway crosses the river and it receives a large tributary of the Castaic Creek.
Below the confluence of the Castaic Creek, Santa Clara flows predominantly southwest through the Santa Clarita Valley. Here she accepts the large right tributaries of the Piru Creek and Cespe Creek . In the lower reaches, Oxnard flows through the wide coastal plain. It flows into the Pacific Ocean between the cities of Ventura and Oxnard .
The river basin is bounded from the south by the Santa Susanna ridge, from the east by the San Gabriel ridge, and from the north by the Santa Ines and Tehachapi ranges. In the west, the Santa Clara Basin borders on the Ventura River Basin and Matilich; in the northwest - with the Santa Ines river basin. In the north lies the inner basin of Lake Tulare in the east, the Mojave River Basin; and in the south, the Los Angeles River Basin. Santa Clara is Southern California's second largest river after the Santa Ana River .
