History

Historically, Cambodia and Vietnam were at enmity with each other, but more important were the contradictions that arose between the leadership of North Vietnam and the Khmer Rouge in the early 1970s. At first, the North Vietnamese army took an active part in the Cambodian civil war on the side of the Khmer Rouge, but the deep disagreements between the allies that showed up led North Vietnam to withdraw its troops from the front line in 1972-1973. At the end of December 1978 (according to other sources, a month earlier [2] ) Vietnam (com. Van Thien Dung ) launched a full-scale invasion of Cambodia with the aim of overthrowing the Khmer Rouge regime. On January 7, 1979, Phnom Penh was taken. Power was transferred to the United Front of National Salvation of Kampuchea , led by Heng Samrin . This organization was created in December 1978 and played almost no role in the hostilities, however, for ideological purposes, it was it that was presented as the liberator of the Cambodian people from tyranny by Pol Pot [3] .

In 2005, Vietnam and Cambodia signed an additional agreement to the 1985 treaty on the delimitation of national borders, which Cambodia considered unacceptable. In 2011, the Cambodian government announced that it was accelerating the process of demarcating the border with Vietnam [4] . On June 24, 2012, Nguyen Tan Dung and Hun Sen personally participated in the demarcation of the last section of the common border and reaffirmed their intentions for cooperation and friendship between the two countries [5] .

In July 2014, mass protests were held in Cambodia for the annexation of the Mekong Delta , populated mainly by the Khmer Kroms . Protesters demanded that Vietnam recognize this territory as part of Cambodia and apologize for the occupation. On July 9, 2014, the Embassy of Vietnam issued a statement urging Cambodia to respect the sovereignty of Vietnam and refused to apologize. [6] In response, the protesters burned the Vietnamese flag and currency [7] . Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung called on Cambodia to take action against extremists after burning the Vietnamese flag during the visit of National Assembly President Heng Samrin to Vietnam. [8] In October 2014, protesters threatened to burn the embassy of Vietnam. [9]

Economic Relations

Both countries planned to increase bilateral trade by 27% over 5 years: from 2.3 billion US dollars in 2010 and to 6.5 billion US dollars by 2015 [10] [11] .
