Gottselig, Johnny

Johnny ( Johannes ) Gotselig ( born Johannes (Johnny) Gottselig ; 1906 - 1986 ) - Canadian hockey player of German origin; left winger who spent 17 seasons in the National Hockey League from 1928 to 1945. Also a hockey coach.

Biography

He was born on June 24, 1906 in the small German Catholic village of Klosterdorf in the Swedish colony of the Kherson province of the Russian Empire and in the same year he emigrated to Canada with his family. He grew up in Regina , Saskatchewan . In later years, he said that he was born in Odessa. His parents were Albert Gottselig and Margarethe Weber . [one]

He originally played for the Regina Pats team. [2] In the 1927/1928 season he played at the Winnipeg Maroons ( American Hockey Association ). Then he spent his career in the NHL in Chicago with the Chicago Blackhawks team, having played 589 games for it , scored 176 goals and made 195 assists (gaining 371 points). He won two Stanley Cups in his career - in 1934 and 1938. After his hockey career ended, Gotselig became the head coach of the team, and then worked in the team as director of public relations.

In addition to hockey, Johnny Gotselig was the manager of the women's baseball team for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League for several years — he worked for Racine Belles (1943-1944), Peoria Redwings (1947) and Kenosha Comets (1949-1950).

Died of a heart attack on May 15, 1986 in Chicago, Illinois. He was buried in the city of Evanston (Illinois) at the cemetery Calvary Cemetery . [3] On the tombstone the year of birth is 1905.
