Pavoloka (from dragging ) - fabric glued to the icon board before applying gesso . Serves for better adhesion of gesso to the surface of the board.
Pavoloka was not always used in icon painting. There are icons on which the entire base under the ground is covered with a pavolka, but more often the joints of a multi-part icon board (shield) or local defects (knots, twigs, etc.) were covered with pieces of pavolok. For the manufacture of expensive icons, a high-quality cypress board was chosen, and an expensive fabric of complex weaving was used as a pavolka. Cheaper icons used fabric with a rarer arrangement of threads, the so-called sickle . On mass icons - the so-called "rubella" - sometimes paper was used as a pavolok. Currently, gauze is often used as a pavolka .
