Trekking

On the track at Lon Peak ( scrambling required )

Lon Peak is usually climbed from June to September [2] , experienced tourists can try their hand in the fall. Most tourists will need from five to seven hours on the route [3] . Winter climbing is also possible, but it may take several days, good preliminary planning and much more effort [3] .

The path to the top has more than a dozen different routes. All options have their positive and negative sides, but any of them will require at least scrambling , since the is labeled from grade 3 to 5.10 YDS [2] .

The crest of the summit ridge is required to be used in all variants of the route; it requires scrambling with a serious effect of height ( English Exposure ). And, although it is not complicated, a fall can become fatal [3] .

Using a GPS navigator may be useful, but not required for tracking on Lon Peak.

Two historical routes to the top of Lon Peak are the track through the Draper ridge and the track “Jacob's Ladder”. The Jacob's Staircase is the shortest and fastest path to the top, but it also contains some very steep sections. The track through the Draper ridge, in turn, hung and is no longer supported. The track is in a very worn condition, therefore it is not recommended for use [3] .

The track “Entrance to the Cherry Canyon” is a relatively new track and currently competes with the track “Jacob's Ladder” as the most popular route to the top. This track is sometimes also called the Bear Canyon track, since it actually passes through the Bear Canyon, only touching the Cherry. This track is well maintained and runs near water sources, but it is longer than others [3] .

Shelter

Wooden shelter located at coordinates in the meadow from the south-west side, was laid in 1960. Construction was completed in 1967, long before Lon Peak was declared a nature reserve. The shelter has three beds, a bowler hat, a pot-bellied stove, a wardrobe and two small windows. The roof is made of plastic, with grass and dirt as an insulating material. The shelter is partially hidden in large trees growing in the area. In October 1997, the Draper family fell into a severe snowstorm and took refuge in a shelter until they were rescued. The shelter houses a magazine in which visitors can add their own stories.

Accidents

  • December 15, 1936 - seven people died when a Boeing 247 [4] crashed just below Hardy Ridge on Lon Piquet [5] . The main parts of the aircraft fell more than 300 meters below the ridge. [four]
  • July 25, 2002 - Two tourists were struck by lightning on a track when they tried to take cover. [6]
  • September 8, 2015 - a woman fell 60-90 meters not far from the circus . Her body was found only the next day [7] .

The Devil's Brigade

In the film The Devil's Brigade, the scene of the attack on the Nazi fortress was shot in the lower part of Lon Peak, but in the film the mountain was called Jordan.
