History
Before the development of the region, immigrants from Europe were inhabited by people belonging to the Patvin people, branches of the Vintan people. They lived in valleys between mountains and ranges and near the river. There were no settlements on the territory of modern Woodland, but it is believed that this was a zone for hunting and collecting seeds. The simultaneous enslavement and spread of disease among Patvin by the Spanish missionaries took dramatic consequences: the malaria epidemic of 1830-1833 and the smallpox epidemic in 1837 killed many Aboriginal people. However, it was discovered that some of the first farmers in Woodland were from the Patvin people [2] .
The origins of the city date back to 1850, when California gained its statehood and Yolo County was created. At this time, Yolo City was founded, which became an important agricultural center. Irrigation was one of the main success factors. The first irrigation canal was built by James Moore in 1856, he was the owner of the territory on which the Kash Creek River was located. In 1861, a post office was opened in the city, and the city itself was renamed Woodland. A year later, the district center was moved from Washington after its flooding (now West Sacramento ). The expansion of the city was facilitated by fertile soil, climatic conditions, a good transport system and the status of the district center. The city was incorporated in 1871 [2] .
Construction of the railway, proximity to Sacramento, construction of Interstate 5 interstate highway helped create a prosperous city.
