Quotas won by athletes are personalized. If two or more athletes win a trip to the Games from one country, then the right to choose a boxer is granted to the National Olympic Committee. Boxing competitions are held in the playoffs. To win the Olympic tournament, the boxer must win either four or five victories, depending on the draw of the competitions. Both athletes who lose in the semifinal matches become owners of bronze awards.

In wrestling competitions, as in the previous three Games, 18 sets of awards will be drawn. 6 for men in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling and 6 for women in freestyle wrestling. Each match consists of two rounds of 3 minutes, the winner is the athlete with the most technical points. In the qualification round, selection was made both to the final of the team all-around and to the finals of personal disciplines. 24 athletes with the highest results were selected for the individual all-around final, and 8 athletes for the finals of individual exercises, and in the final of the individual disciplines, the country could not be represented by more than 2 athletes. In the team all-around qualification, 4 athletes competed in each projectile, and the three best results counted. In the final of the team competition, three athletes performed on each apparatus and all three results counted.

The last time golf competitions in the framework of the Olympic Games took place in 1904. Competitions of golfers will take place on an 18-hole course, with a score of 72 pairs. Each participant will go through all 18 holes 4 times.

Judo competitions were held according to the elimination system. In the consolation rounds were athletes who lost to the semifinalists of the tournament. The two athletes who won the consolation round fought with the judokas who lost in the semifinals in the bronze match.

In each of the rounds, athletes had to go the distance with a different number of obstacles and a different time limit. For each obstacle brought down the athlete was awarded 4 penalty points, for exceeding the time limit 1 penalty point (for every 5 seconds). Only three athletes from one country could go to the finals of the individual championship. Team jumping was held as part of the second and third round of individual qualifications. Three best results, shown by athletes during the individual championship, were counted in the team competition. If an athlete dropped out of individual competitions after the first or second rounds, then he still continued his performances, but the results at the same time went only to the team standings.

Table tennis competitions were held in the playoffs . Each match continues until one of the tennis players wins 4 games. The strongest 16 athletes started the competition from the third round, the next 16 rated started from the second round.

Sailing competitions in each of the classes consisted of 10 or 12 races. Athletes began each race with a common start. The winner was the crew, the first to cross the finish line. The number of points going to the overall standings corresponded to the place occupied by the team. According to the results of preliminary races, the top 10 crews got into the medal race, the results of which also went into the overall standings. In the medal race, points earned by the crew doubled. If a competitor was unable to complete the race, he was awarded the number of points equal to the number of participants plus one. In the final scoring, the worst result shown by the crew in one of the races was not taken into account. The team with the fewest points becomes the Olympic champion.

In January 2013, the International Shooting Sport Federation adopted new rules for holding competitions for 2013-2016, which, in particular, changed the order of the finals. In many disciplines, athletes who reached the finals now begin the decisive round without points scored in the qualification, and the finals are held according to the elimination system. Also, in the finals after each round of shooting, the athlete with the least points is eliminated from further struggle. In a high-speed pistol, decisive fights take place on a miss-miss system. A semi-final round was added to the trap shooting, where two participants in the final match and a duel for the third place are determined ^[2] .

In the qualification of the competition archers perform 12 series of shots of 6 arrows at a distance of 70 meters. According to the results of the preliminary round, a playoff grid is drawn up, where in the 1/32 finals, the 1st seeding number meets with the 64th, the 2nd with the 63rd, etc. In elimination fights, athletes perform three shots each. The participant who scored more points for this series gets 2 points. If both archers scored the same number of points, then they get one point each. The archer becomes the winner of the pair, having scored 6 points first.

According to the results of the 2015 World Cup, the Taiwan national team received three Olympic licenses in the men's category and only one in the women's, which was brought by Lin Shijia , who became the silver medalist in the individual championship. Taiwanese archers were able to earn a team quota in the women's tournament following the results of the final Olympic qualification, held as part of the World Cup in June 2016.

According to the results of the qualification round, Taiwanese archers took fourth place, losing to the Chinese one point, and the Russian team 6. In the playoff round, Taiwanese archers hardly defeated the Mexican team 5: 4, and then in the semifinals they could not oppose South Korean athletes 1: five. In the duel for third place, Dan Yadin , Lin Shijia and Le Jianying confidently defeated the Italians 6: 2 and won bronze medals ^[3] , thereby repeating their best result shown at the 2004 Games ^[4] .

Each NOC independently chooses the category in which its weightlifter will perform. As part of the competition, two exercises are carried out - a jerk and a push. In each exercise, the athlete is given 3 attempts. The winner is determined by the sum of two exercises. In case of equality of results, the victory is awarded to the athlete, with less weight.

A stubborn struggle unfolded for victory in the category of up to 53 kg. After the breakthrough, the Chinese weightlifter Li Yajun was in the lead, setting a new Olympic record (101 kg), however, in the clean and jerk, the Chinese woman was unable to make any successful attempts and dropped out of the fight for medals ^[5] . As a result, the Taiwanese athlete Xu Shujing became the winner of the competition, who, having lifted 212 kg by the sum of the exercises, was able to defend her champion’s title won at the Games in London ^[6] .

A few hours before the start of the competition in the category of up to 63 kg, it became known that the world record holder in the sum of two exercises, Lin Zizi, would not take part in the tournament ^[7] . The reason for this was a failed doping test taken from an athlete shortly before the start of the competition. It is noteworthy that for Lin Ziqi, the Games in Rio de Janeiro became the second missed due to doping. The athlete missed the games in London because of a two-year disqualification imposed on Lin after the 2010 Asian Games ^[8] .
