History

Thorpe (Torp) was first mentioned in 1086 in the Doomsday Book ( Domesday Book ) in the list of numerous English estates by Hugo de Grandmenil, Sheriff Lester and Governor of Hampshire, generously rewarded by William the Conqueror for participating in the battle under Hastings in 1066 [2] .

Since the XII century, Thorpe has been called Thorpe-Arnold in honor of its new owners, vassals of Count Leicester, who for many generations bore the hereditary name of Ernold (Arnold) de Bosco [3] .

The first barons de Bosco, Ernold I and his son Ernold II, took an active part in the politics of England and Normandy. In particular, Ernold II supported Robert de Beaumont, 2nd Earl of Leicester , for which he was rewarded with the last of many estates in Leicestershire (including Thorpe-Arnold, Brentinby, Evinton, Humberston and Elmerstorp) and Warvikshire (Clifton-on-Dansmoor and Schruli) [ 4] .

In the 17th century, Thorpe-Arnold belonged to Sir Martin Lister , an English politician whose adopted daughter, Francis Agnes Thornhorst, became the mother of Sarah Churchill , Duchess of Marlborough. [5]

Administrative device

Administratively, Thorpe-Arnold is part of the Waltham and Thorpe-Arnold community , which, in turn, is part of the Melton administrative district.
