Biography

Born March 1, 1885 in Gottreur in southern Sweden, in the family of a school teacher Johan Adolf Magnusson and his wife Sofia Christina Ulsson. In 1904 he entered Uppsala University , however, he was forced to temporarily leave his studies for financial reasons. In 1909 he entered the University of Gothenburg , graduated in 1913 with a bachelor's degree. In 1914 he received a Ph.D.

Magnusson worked as a school teacher in Gothenburg for almost 40 years. During the summer holidays he regularly went on expeditions to Sweden, in 1919 and 1921 - to Abiska , in 1924 - to Luxel . Also in the 1920s, Magnusson visited a number of European herbaria to study lichen specimens located there.

In 1935, the processing of the Acarosporaceae and Thelocarpaceae families in Kryptogamen-Flora by Magnusson was published. In 1940, he published a work on lichens in Mongolia and other parts of Central Asia, based on samples brought by Sven Anders Hedin . In the 1940s, Magnusson studied the lichens of the Hawaiian Islands, samples of which he sent Karl Scottsberg .

Magnusson's last work was an unfinished monograph on the genus Ramalina . In the 1950s, he visited several herbaria in Central Europe to examine specimens of this genus; in 1958 he traveled to the United States.

He died on July 14, 1964 .
