March 30, 2012 announced that he would not run for the summer re-election as party chairman and that this decision was not related to conflicts in the area of armed forces reform [1] . On June 10, 2012, at a party congress [2] held on June 9-10, Karl Haglund [3] was elected the new party leader. In connection with this election, it was announced that Haglund would replace Wallin as Minister of Defense of Finland [4] .

Minister of Defense

On June 22, 2011, he was appointed Minister of Defense of Finland in the Cabinet of Ministers Jurkki Katainen [7] .

During the reform undertaken by the Ministry of Defense of Finland , it was proposed to reduce six military garrisons. The scandal surrounding the actions of the Minister of Defense Vallin arose after it became known that the Minister deleted the Swedish-speaking garrison Dragsvik from the list of objects to be closed. [8] A number of politicians (including the party secretary of the SDP, Michael Jungner ) who criticized the army reform, [9] [10] felt that Dragswick was saved by closing other garrisons and called for the Minister’s resignation. Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen nevertheless reaffirmed his confidence in the Minister of Defense, [11] [12] , and the Minister himself rejected the idea of his resignation. [13] The Finnish Parliament, with 95 votes to 59, voted in favor of a vote of confidence in the Minister. [14]

At the same time, a public debate arose around the minister’s apartment deal: in 2001, Wallin and his wife bought an apartment in the center of Turku from the Abo Academy Foundation, paying the fund 225 thousand euros, and sold the apartment to the same fund in 2009 for a little less than 400 thousand euros [ 15] . Chancellor of Justice Jaakko Jonkka did not find in the transaction signs of illicit enrichment of the minister at the expense of the Abo Academy Foundation, of which Wallin is a member of the board. [16] The police also did not find a corpus delicti in the deal [17] .

On July 5, 2012, Wallina was replaced by Karl Haglund as Minister of Defense [18] .
