General Information

The modern history of the women's protest competitions in St. Petersburg begins in 1991, when the city hosted the fifth category WTA tournament for one season. That tournament brought together many of the strongest tennis players who lived out their last months of the USSR and ended in their absolute victory. Then, it was necessary to wait for 12 years to return the competitions of at least a similar level to the city on the Neva - only in 2003, with the support of the national federation, the city managed to start regularly holding the championships of the youngest women’s protour - ITF series . Despite the interest in tennis among city leaders [1] and the presence of several natives of the city in the protest: the strongest of which, Svetlana Kuznetsova , won twice in the mid-2000s, won the Grand Slam tournaments in singles, tournaments in the city did not have permanent large sponsors, and even at the peak of their prosperity, did not have a prize pool of more than $ 50 thousand, while a similar neighboring men's tournament regularly found up to a million dollars for similar purposes.

In 2012, the construction company Kivennapa took the role of the title sponsor of the competition [2] , and the first tournament with its assistance took place at the end of August and had a prize fund of 10 thousand dollars.

In 2016, the license was transferred to one of Gazprom ’s subsidiaries: the tournament moved to the fall and changed its venue, moving from the clay tennis courts of the Children's Tennis Center to the Dynamo TC indoor hard courts, becoming the tournament companion for the St. Men's competition . Petersburg Open , having inherited from their other tournament the name Neva Cup [3] [4] . At the same time, the prize fund was increased to 100 thousand dollars .
