Pioneer Peak

The height of the peak is 1950 meters. It is located near the River Knick , 15 km south of the city of Palmer and 10 km from the Anchorage municipality. Pioneer Peak is a prominent landmark in the Matanuska Susitna Valley , as well as a popular place for trekking , as the mountain boasts one of the simplest approaches to its foundation from all the mountains in Alaska [2] [3] .

The name "Pioneer Peak" mountain was given in 1939, in honor of the first settlers of the agricultural colony in Matanuska [4] .

First climb

The first recorded climb was by Johan Billman, Steve Foss, Helga Ballding and Jim Messick on June 18, 1936. It is noted that one of the settlers of the agricultural colony in Matanusk almost certainly climbed the mountain earlier. It is very difficult to recognize a real first ascent due to the lack of a detailed description of the route and conflicting information about the first ascents [3] .

The second recorded ascent was made on August 16, 1953 by Paul Crews , Warren Crosby and Harry Pursell [3] .

Trekking

A classic route is a track along the northern wall of the peak. This route does not take more than one daylight. According to the classification system of Alaska, the complexity of the route is estimated
like 1+ [3] . This means that for its passage special tools and equipment, as well as technical skills in mountaineering, are not required. The best time for climbing is considered the end of April - the beginning of May [3] .

There are other routes, for example, along the southeast ridge, but they are more complex [2] .
