Mikhail Kritovul [1] ( Greek Μιχαήλ Κριτόβουλος) (c. 1410 , Imvros - c. 1469 ) - a late Byzantine historian, theologian and philosopher.

Biography

Belonged to a noble Byzantine family. He received a good education, had deep knowledge in medicine. He was an opponent of rapprochement with the Latin West. After the fall of Constantinople , in 1456 he became governor of Sultan Mehmed II on his native island of Imvros.

He contributed to the liberation of the island of Lemnos from the power of the Italians and its transfer to the Turks.

In 1466 , when the islands of Imvros, Thasos and Samothrace were captured by the Venetians, he left his homeland and settled in Constantinople , where he happened to survive the epidemic of the plague of 1467 .

Compositions

By order of the Sultan, he wrote the “Historical Composition” in 5 books on the acts of the Ottoman conqueror in 1451-1467, also known as the “History of Mehmed II.” He wrote about the personality of the sultan in panegyric terms. This Turkophile work has become a monument to the new, Ottoman historical era. The text is preserved in one single manuscript.

He is the author of a number of theological works and philosophical treatises.
