In 1920 she came to Paris, studied painting , then photography , met Brassay , Cartier-Bresson , became close to surrealists ( Breton , Bataille , etc.). She was an assistant to Man Ray , in 1935 she opened her own photo studio. Her photo montage “Dad Ubyu” ( 1936 ) became a kind of visiting card of surreal art.

In 1936, at the Paris cafe “ De Mago ” Paul Eluard introduced Maar to Picasso , whose girlfriend, model and muse she became for 9 years. Maar photographed a lot of Picasso (especially during his work on " Guernica "), under his influence turned to painting. Picasso often created images of the sad Maar, in his work she forever remained a “crying woman”.

In 1945 , after breaking up with Picasso, Maar survived a severe mental crisis, was treated in a psychiatric clinic by Jacques Lacan . After an exhibition of paintings ( 1957 ), for many years she shut herself up in her apartment, wrote poems and paintings , and was almost forgotten.

The fully pictorial heritage of Maar, highly praised by the public and critics , was presented only at the posthumous retrospective exhibition ( 1999 ).

Dora Maar spent her last years in her apartment on Savoy Street, on the left bank of Paris. She died on July 16, 1997 at the age of 89. She was buried in the Bois-Tardieu cemetery in Clamart. [five]
