Biography
Luigi Valadier was the son of Andre Valadier, a Provencal jeweler who moved to housing and work in Rome . Luigi was born in Rome and had four sons, who will also become jewelers. Among them, Giuseppe Valadier , theorist of architecture, urban planner.
Luigi began as an apprentice and assistant in his father's workshop on the Via del Babuino in Rome. He inherited the workshop of his father and his clients among the popes, cardinals , aristocrats from the German principalities, Italy itself and Spain . Among the completed orders for the Catholic Church are a precious set of liturgical items for the cathedral in Montreal near Palermo , a baptismal fountain with the figure of John the Baptist (Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome ).
He developed an eclectic style using valuable materials and antique stones found during predatory excavations in Rome. He worked as a sculptor who made bronze copies of ancient Rorian sculptures.
The circumstances were rather unfortunate for the jeweler, because he worked with precious materials, spending large sums on their acquisition. Noble customers were in no hurry to settle accounts with the master, as evidenced by the numerous accounts of Luigi Valadier, found after his death.
The tragedy broke out during the casting of a new bell for St. Peter's Basilica. The master was on the verge of bankruptcy due to the inability to pay off debts and committed suicide by rushing into the Tiber River.
