Minato-Mirai 21 ( Japanese み な と み ら い 21 Minato Mirai Nijuichi , also known simply as Minato-Mirai or MM for short) is the central business district of the Japanese city of Yokohama . Founded in the 1980s, Minato Mirai 21 was created as a major urban center and had a master development plan. It was supposed to connect the traditionally important areas and business centers of the Kannai quarter and the area of the Yokohama railway station .

In the center of the district there is a pedestrian zone around which the main hotels and office buildings are located, including the Landmark Tower , the Pacific Yokohama Conference Center, art museums, cafes, shops, and shopping centers. The area continues to develop according to plans for the 1980s.

General information
The Minato Mirai 21 District Plan was proposed in 1965 by Yokohama Mayor Ichio Asukata as one of the six main city development plans. The construction itself began in 1983 after a series of evaluations and revisions of the plan. Where the area is located, there were the Yokohama shipyard Mitsubishi Heavy Industries , the sorting station of the Japanese National Railways state railway company, the moorings of Takashima and Shinko port of Yokohama . Port and industrial areas were divided between two urban centers - the Kannai quarter and the Yokohama station area. With the development of Minato-Mirai 21, these territories became part of the business and public “core” of Yokohama. The name “Minato-Mirai 21” was chosen by popular vote and roughly means “Sea gate to the future [in] 21 [m century]”.
Now [ specify ] the area is thriving, being one of the most modern urban business centers of the Greater Tokyo area. Landmark attractions include the Landmark Tower, Japan’s third tallest skyscraper, three Queens Square shopping buildings, the Pacific Yokohama Conference Center, the Intercontinental Hotel, Cosmo Clock 21 Ferris Wheel and much more. Near the Landmark Tower is the Yokohama Museum of Art .
In the Minato Mirai area, there are head offices and branches of many well-known corporations, for example, Nissan , JGC Corporation , Chiyoda Corporation . Today [ specify ] Minato Mirai 21 employs about 79,000 people.
