Ferdinand started playing football for the youth teams of various clubs, having stopped at the West Ham United club, in which he made his way from the youth team to the main team and made his debut in the Premier League in 1996. He became a fan favorite, winning the Hammer of the Year prize for the 1997/98 season. He played his first match for the national team against Cameroon in 1997, becoming the youngest defender at the time, playing for England. With his game and potential, Rio attracted the attention of Leeds , who bought Ferdinand for a record £ 18 million for the club. After spending two seasons at Leeds, he became its captain in 2001.
In July 2002, Ferdinand moved to Manchester United for £ 30 million, once again breaking the club transfer record. In the first season for United, he won the Premier League . In 2003, Rio refused to pass the mandatory test for doping , for which he received an eight-month suspension (starting in January 2004), missing half of the season in the Premier League, as well as Euro 2004 . After the end of the disqualification, he firmly entrenched in the main part of Manchester United and earned recognition with his performances, several times hitting the “team of the year” according to the PFA. He won the Premier League in the 2006/07 , 2007/08 , 2008/09 , 2010/11 and 2012/13 seasons, as well as the Champions League in 2008. In March 2008, Ferdinand first brought to the field the England team with the captain's armband.
Ferdinand was a widower, was married to Rebecca Ellison, they had two sons, Lorenz and Tate, and a daughter, Tia. There are many football players in the Ferdinand family: Rio’s sibling brother, Anton Ferdinand , also plays the role of central defender, and the former striker Les Ferdinand is his cousin. In addition to playing football, Rio participates in a number of musical and television projects, including the Rio's World Cup Wind-Ups series of programs (in the format of the Ashton Kutcher show “ Stand ”).
Career start
Childhood and study
Rio Gavin Ferdinand was born on November 7, 1978 in the London district of Camberwell , in the family of Janice Lavender, a woman with a mixed Irish-English background, and St. Lucian Julian Ferdinand [5] [6] . Ferdinand grew up in a large family. Both Rio’s mother and father worked to feed the family: the mother was a baby-sitter and the father was a tailor. They had never been officially married, and when Rio was 14 years old, his parents separated. The children stayed with their mother, but the father stayed close and took an active part in raising children, often arranging football training for them in local parks [5] [7] . Rio attended Camelot Elementary School and was a pretty wild child. Among the idols of his childhood were Mike Tyson and Diego Maradona [8] .
Since childhood, Rio has become accustomed to living without luxury, since it grew up in Pekema , a criminalized area of London, half of whose inhabitants are below the poverty line [9] . In the area there were frequent cases of atrocious crimes, for example, the murder of Nigerian schoolboy Damilola Taylor. Parents taught Rio to avoid dangerous situations and Ferdinand managed to avoid close acquaintance with the dark side of Pekema [7] . At school, Rio loved mathematics most of all, and also discovered the ability to perform in public, playing in the school play “ Bugsy Malone ” [8] . Even at school, he proved to be a good footballer and began to dream of a professional football career [7] .
As a child, I always wanted to do something unusual, I was quickly annoyed by any activity — even football or walking with friends. Traveling away from home, meeting new people ... I enjoyed it [7] .
Original Text (Eng.)I'd get you bored very easily - even playing football or hanging around with my mates. So traveling away from home, meeting new people ... I enjoyed it.
Rio moved to the Blackheath military school, which was located away from his home, in order to meet new friends and adapt to the new environment [5] . The second year of his schooling was overshadowed by the murder of Rio's classmate, Stephen Lawrence. This tragedy demonstrated a high level of violence in the surrounding society [8] . Ferdinand liked the physical expression of his emotions: in addition to playing football, he did gymnastics, attended drama and theater circles [10] , and also studied ballet [7] . He was a capable child: by the age of 10 he had already been invited to train at the Queens Park Rangers Academy, and at 11 he won a grant to attend Central Ballet School in London [5] . He enthusiastically attended classes in ballet and for four years he traveled to the city center to a ballet school, in which classes were held four times a week. These classes certainly improved his physical balance skills, but Rio dreamed of a football career [7] .
Performances for youth teams
Ferdinand’s outstanding football abilities showed up in childhood: when Rio was 11 years old, his coach, David Goodwin, said: “ I will call you Pele, son ... I like the way you play ” [7] . Ferdinand regularly played for various youth teams. In Eltham Town, he played the position of attacking midfielder , but the team scouts saw the quality of the center defender in the youth. The young soccer player trained with the youth teams of such clubs as Charlton Athletic , Chelsea , Millwall and Queens Park Rangers . Ferdinand always liked to visit new places, and once he made a trip to the north, spending his holidays at the Middlesbrough training base [7] .
In 1992, a talented young man was noticed by West Lamp United scout Frank Lampard Sr. , after which Rio passed the Hammers Academy [5] . He made his first youth contract in January 1994 and trained with players like Frank Lampard at the West Ham Academy [7] [11] . In addition to performances at the club level, 16-year-old Ferdinand was called and played in the youth team of England at the European Football Championships [7] .
Professional career
West Ham United
Ferdinand gradually made his way from the youth team to the main one and signed a professional contract with the club [7] . Rio played his first match for the first team on May 5, 1996, replacing Toni Cotti in the final match of the season against Sheffield Wednesday . The match ended in a draw with a score of 1: 1 [7] [12] . In November 1996, Ferdinand moved to Bournemouth on loan. He played 10 games for the cherry , then returned to West Ham, where he played the rest of the season. On February 1, 1997, Rio scored his first goal in his professional career, distinguished himself in the Premier League match against Blackburn Rovers , lost by the hammers with a score of 2: 1 [13] . In the summer, a request for the transfer of Ferdinand was made by the champion of England, Manchester United , but West Ham rejected the offer of the Mankunians [14] .
In the 1997/98 season, Ferdinand , 20, became a player at West Ham United, and played 35 matches in the English Premier League. In May 1998, Rio received the Hammer of the Year prize, beating around midfielder Steve Lomas [15] .
Leeds United
In November 2000, Ferdinand moved to Leeds United for £ 18 million, which made up the British transfer record [16] . In addition, Rio has become the most expensive defender in world football. Ferdinand's debut for the " peacocks " was unsuccessful: guest defeat by Leicester City (3: 1) [17] , but in the end, Leeds spent a good season, finishing 4th in the Premier League and reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League . In the quarterfinals, Rio scored a goal against Deportivo (the game ended with the score 3: 0), which eventually led the Yorkshire to the next stage [18] . In August 2001, before the start of the new season, he became the captain of Leeds [19] .
In the 2001/02 season, Leeds United finished a little worse, in 5th place. For the first time in his career, Rio was included in the “team of the year” according to the PFA (another central defender is Sami Hyyupya from Liverpool ) [20] .
Manchester United
2002—2006
On July 22, 2002, Rio Ferdinand signed a five-year contract with Manchester United . [21] His transfer was the most expensive in the history of British football, and Rio again became the most expensive defender in the world (previously it was Lilian Thuram ) [22] . The amount of the transfer included a “basic element” (more than £ 20 million), as well as additional payments potentially raising the amount of the transfer to more than 30 million. Later, Leeds United, being in conditions of lack of financial resources, decided to take the amount in one payment, and not in a series of payments that could be higher. As a result, the actual transfer of Ferdinand to Manchester United with all payments amounted to 33 million pounds [23] . This amount includes agency fees; except for them, Leeds gained 29.1 million pounds.
Rio made his debut for the Red Devils on August 27 in a qualifying round match of the Champions League against the Hungarian Zalaegerszeg . "United" defeated the Hungarians 5: 0 and went further, and Ferdinand was replaced in the second half [24] . In the 2002/03 season, Ferdinand became the player of the starting line-up of Manchester, he helped the team win the champion title, which the previous year, Sir Alex lost to Arsenal . Rio played in both matches 1/4 finals of the Champions League, where Manchester United came out after two group stages. United lost to Real Madrid (overall score 6: 5), and the match at Old Trafford is considered one of the best fights in the history of the Champions League [25] [26] . The journalists noted Ferdinand’s not-too-confident game in both the first part of the confrontation between the two clubs [27] and the second [28] .
On September 23, 2003, Ferdinand missed the mandatory doping test, saying later that he simply “forgot about it” because he was busy moving to another house and was carried away by shopping. [29] The FA Disciplinary Committee , chaired by Barry Bright, imposed an eight-month suspension on football, starting in January 2004, which extended to both club and international levels, as well as a fine of 50,000 pounds. This meant that Rio would miss the rest of the 2003/04 season and the start of the 2004/05 season , as well as the 2004 European Championships [30] . Manchester United filed an appeal against this decision of the FA, citing the process against Manchester City player Christian Negouai , who was only fined £ 2,000 for an admission test [31] . FIFA President Sepp Blatter said that such comparisons are incorrect, because there is a significant difference between these incidents. Neguayi got into a traffic jam, but was about to take the test, while Ferdinand was accused of not taking the test [32] . Both the FA and FIFA announced their intention to increase the disqualification to 12 months (half of the possible maximum). But in the end, the original verdict was suspended with a disqualification of 8 months [33] .
Rio returned to the game on September 20, 2004 in a derby against Liverpool at Old Trafford (2: 1), his game earned the praise of the head coach of Sir Alex Ferguson of Mancunians [34] . Until the end of the season, Ferdinand missed only 2 matches of the English Premier League, in which Manchester United took third place. Even then, he began to appear on the field as a captain of United, for example, in the famous match against Arsenal at Old Trafford , when the Red Devils interrupted the 49-game unbeaten “ Gunners ”. The captain of Manchester, Roy Keane, missed the crucial match due to the flu , and Ferdinand put on a bandage [35] .
In the last match of the 2004/05 season, Rio played all 120 minutes in the FA Cup final , where the Red Devils lost to Arsenal in a penalty shootout [36] . In the summer of 2005, Manchester United entered into a new four-year contract with Ferdinand [37] .
On December 14, 2005, Ferdinand scored his first goal for United, opening the scoring in the English Premier League vs. Wigan (4: 0) [38] . On January 22, 2006, Rio scored the only and winning goal for Liverpool with a header after filing Ryan Giggs [39] [40] . The Red Devils finished second in the Premier League, finally dropping out of the title race after losing to Chelsea in the 37th round (3-0) [41] . Prior to that, in February 2006, Manchester United won the Football League Cup; Rio Ferdinand went into the starting lineup for the final match , which ended with the defeat of "Wigan" all with the same score 4: 0 [42] . In total for the 2005/06 season, Rio held 52 matches, of which 37 were in the English Premier League.
2006–2010
On October 22, 2006, Rio Ferdinand again scored against the Liverpool gate in the Old Trafford derby, which ended in a 2-0 win by the hosts [43] . In the course of the 2006/07 season, the Serbian defender Nemanja Vidić , who had been bought shortly before in the winter transfer window, became Ferdinand's partner in the center of defense. The “brilliant” duet of Vidic and Ferdinand became the main one for the “ red devils ” over the next few years, earning the lucrative feedback from experts and the press, who considered the reliable play of the central defenders to be one of the main reasons for the success of Manchester United [44] [45] . The first was the victory in the Premier League 2006/07: United returned the champion title 4 years later, leaving behind Chelsea and Arsenal. After impressive and stable performances in the Rio Championship, he got into the "team of the year" according to the PFA version [46] .
In the Champions League, Manchester United reached the semifinals, losing to Milan with a total score of 5: 3 [47] . Rio missed both semifinal matches due to a groin injury in a draw against Middlesbrough (1: 1) on April 21, 2007 [48] . He did not play for two weeks and entered the field on May 5 in the Manchester derby , and after - in the FA Cup final , the first on the updated Wembley ; Manchester United lost to Chelsea, conceding a single goal in overtime a few minutes before the final whistle [49] .
At the start of the 2007/08 season , thanks to the coordinated actions of the defense and the goalkeeper, United played six matches in a row to run dry in the Premier League, conceding a goal only on October 20, 2007 at the start of the match against Aston Villa at Villa Park [ 50] . In the same match, Ferdinand scored his first goal of the season, which became United's third goal in this game: after hitting Rio’s left foot, the ball ricocheted from one of Villa’s defenders and flew into the home team's goal [51] . Just three days later, Ferdinand scored his first goal in the Champions League, opening the scoring with a header against Dynamo Kiev [52] . United dominated the match and won it 4-2.
On January 12, 2008, Ferdinand scored a goal against Newcastle , when the Red Devils defeated their rival with a 6: 0 score on Old Trafford [53] .
In the quarterfinal match of the FA Cup against Portsmouth on March 8, 2008, Ferdinand had to get in after Edwin van der Sar left the field with a groin injury, and Tomas Kushchak , who replaced him, was dismissed and a penalty was awarded to United. . Ferdinand guessed the direction of the blow, but could not beat Sally Muntari's blow from the penalty spot. Manchester United flew out of the FA Cup [54] .
On April 6, 2008, in the match with Middlesbrough, Ferdinand injured his leg and, limping, left the field. His participation in the second quarter final match of the Champions League with Roma on April 9 was questionable. Nevertheless, he played all 90 minutes in this match, although during the break he was given three stitches [55] .
After the April defeat of United by Chelsea in the Premier League with a score of 2: 1, Ferdinand, irritated by the result, attacked Chelsea’s stewards and cursed the wall in the tunnel, but instead hit a woman steward, Tracy Rey [ 56] . Ferdinand said that he barely touched her with his boot.
Original Text (Eng.)I am delighted to have signed a new contract. Who wouldn't want to play in this fantastic team in front of 75,000 fans each week, it has been an incredible journey and I am glad it will continue. I can now fully concentrate on my club career, which has worked well for me over the past few years.
Career in the national team

Outside of football
Personal life
Rio has a brother and three sisters on her father’s side, as well as a brother and sister on her mother’s side after she remarried [5] . One of his brothers, Anton Ferdinand , plays the role of defender in Southend United , and his cousin Les Ferdinand is a former England striker [8] . On March 15, 2008, it was announced that Rio’s half-brother, Jeremiah, was training with the main line-up of Manchester United under the supervision of Sir Alex Ferguson [107] .
In 2006, in Manchester , Rio Ferdinand and his girlfriend Rebecca Allison had a son, Lorenz [108] . Resting with family and friends in Las Vegas in July 2007, Rio made an offer to Rebecca, to which she agreed. [109] In August 2008, the couple had a second child, the boy was named Tate. The names of the children come from the name of one of the favorite actors of the spouses, Lorentz Tate [110] . On April 17, 2011, Rio and Rebecca had a daughter, who was named Tia [111] . On May 2, 2015, it became known that his wife Rio died after a brief fight against cancer [112] .
Television appearances
In June 2006, the day when the England team held its first World Cup match against Paraguay , Ferdinand made his debut as a TV host. In the Rio's World Cup Wind-Ups program, England defender played a number of their partners [113] , including Wayne Rooney , David Beckham and Gary Neville . It was planned to remove an additional series called Rio's All-Star Wind-Ups , but this idea had to be abandoned due to unpleasant incidents that happened on the set.
It is also reported that Ferdinand is engaged in filming a documentary about the murder of the Nigerian schoolboy Damilola Taylor. Ferdinand grew up close to where the 10-year-old boy was killed in 2000 [5] . It is planned that this will be the first film in a series of plots directed by Ferdinand, which will be shot in order to convince young people not to take part in criminal gangs.
Record Label
In 2005, Ferdinand, together with his old school friend, founded the record label White Chalk Music [114] . Currently, there are two musicians working with this label: Melody Johnston and Nia Jai, the latter having released an album on October 6, 2008, in which Ferdinand raps [115] .
Charitable Foundation
Being a famous footballer, Ferdinand, who grew up in one of the disadvantaged areas of London, founded the charity organization Live the Dream Foundation , designed to help teenagers realize themselves in sports or art. In 2009, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown [116] took part in one of the Live the Dream Foundation events. In 2014, due to claims on the Live the dream trademark by the Kathmandu Limited [117], the foundation was renamed the Rio Ferdinand Foundation
Traffic Violations
July 6, 2018
Ferdinand committed a number of traffic offenses and lost his rights five times. Most often, Rio was punished for speeding: for example, in May 2005, he was driving a car at a speed of 170 km / h, for which he was fined 1,500 pounds [118] . The most famous incident occurred in 1997, when Rio was accused of driving while intoxicated , forcing England 's head coach Glenn Hoddle to exclude him from the application for the qualifying game for the World Cup, which was supposed to be the debut of Ferdinand for England's main team [119 ] .
September 12, 2012 Rio Ferdinand was deprived of a driver's license for 6 months. This happened after the surveillance cameras recorded speeding from his side three times in five weeks [120] .
Homophobic sayings
In October 2006, Ferdinand was in the center of the scandal, live calling BBC Radio 1 DJ Chris Moiles “fag”, just a few days after his teammate Paul Scholes also made a homophobic statement about the DJ, calling him “gay with a funny haircut ". Moyles jokingly asked Ferdinand: “If you had to choose with whom to go on a date, who would you choose: Smajer or Scolzi?”, Referring to Alan Smith and Paul Scholes, respectively. Ferdinand replied: “I don’t want to think about it, I’m not interested in discussing meetings with freaks,” and when Moyles admitted that he would always prefer Smith, Ferdinand replied: “You are a fagot.” After that, he apologized for his words, saying: “I am not a homophobe” [121] .
Racist sayings
In August 2012, the FA Disciplinary Commission fined Rio Ferdinand £ 45,000 for tweeting about Chelsea player Ashley Cole . Ferdinand retweeted someone else's record, where Cole was called "chocolate ice cream" ( English choc-ice ); in British slang it means “black on the outside, white on the inside” [122] . The reason was the trial between Anton Ferdinand and John Terry , during which Cole testified in favor of Terry.
