Biography

Shimen Lelchuk was born in 1918 in the town of Kalinkovichi, Minsk province (currently - Gomel region ). He graduated from high school in 1935. He moved to Minsk , entered the labor faculty [5] . Then he studied at the Department of the Jewish Language at the Minsk Pedagogical Institute, then he was forced to retrain for Russian literature. After receiving his diploma in 1939, he was drafted into the Red Army and sent to the infantry school of the city of Kamyshlov, Sverdlovsk Region. The rank of lieutenant was appointed platoon commander of a rifle regiment stationed in Riga [2] [3] [6] .

He began to compose poems in childhood, the first publications took place in the pioneer and Komsomol publications of Belarus [5] . In 1938, he seriously declared himself as a poet by publishing several verses in Yiddish in the Stern magazine. Another publication took place in the Oktyaber newspaper. Another 8 poems appeared in the collection "Leader-Zamlung" (1940) [2] . He was admitted to the Union of Writers of Belarus [5] .

Among Lelchuk's friends were famous Jewish poets and writers of Belarus: Lev Talalay, Gennady Shvedik, Rouve Reisin , Pinya Plotkin.

The personal poetry collection that the poet dreamed of, he did not have time to release [6] . In the first months of World War II, he died [K 1] [4] [3] . Many of his works became songs that were performed by Mikhail Alexandrovich , Neham Lifshikayte and Theodor Bikel [5] .

After the war, the poems of Shimen Lelchuk were published in the collections “We Will Not Forget Them” ( Belarusian. “We Will Not Forget It” , 1949) [5] , “With Blood of the Heart” (1967) [7] , “Lira” (1985) [5] [2] , “Tablets of Memory” ( Belor. “Skryzhali pamyatsi” , 2005) [5] .

Memory

From 1985 to 1993, a museum was opened in school No. 150 of the city of Minsk, dedicated to Belarusian writers and poets who died during the Great Patriotic War. One of the museum stands was dedicated to Shimen Lelchuk. At present, the materials placed on it have been transferred to the Belarusian State Archive-Museum of Literature and Art [5] .

In Kalinovichi, a memorial plaque was installed at the school where Lelchuk studied, currently dismantled [5] .
