Fort Carillon was built by Pierre de Rigot de Vodroy , Governor of French Canada , to protect Lake Champlain from British invasion. Located on the shore of the lake fifteen miles south of Fort Saint-Frederick , it was built to defend against attack as a stronghold in a possible future war. [1]
