Biography

Sodnompil Pilkheev was born on the territory of the modern Kyakhta district of Buryatia . He studied in the Congol Datsan with his uncle, the first Pandito Hambo Lama Damba-Dorjo Zayayev.

After graduating, Hatherheev took an active part in the construction of new Buddhist temples in Eastern Siberia .

In 1767, together with Pandito Khambo-Lama Zayaev, he was a member of the government commission for drafting a new religious code. For this activity Hatherheev was awarded a gold medal.

In 1774, Sodnompil Hatherkheev was confirmed as a deputy to the government of the Irkutsk province . In this capacity, he is actively involved in the public and political affairs of the province [1] .

In 1776, the first Pandito Hambo Lama Damba-Dorjo Zayayev leaves for Nirvana .

Pandito Hambo Lama's post

On May 31, 1778, by the decree of the Irkutsk Provincial Administration, Sodnompil Pilter Kheterheev was appointed Pandito Hambo Lama of Transbaikalia Buddhists, becoming the second hierarch [1] .

In 1764, 4 Buryat Cossack regiments were formed, with 6 hundred each. After Khetherheev became Khambo-Lama, 142 regular lamas were attached to the Buryat Cossack troops [1] .

In 1789, the Irkutsk Governor F.N. Klitschka suggested that Hambo Lama Kheterheev translate part of the lamas into a complete position, and the rest, excluding from the clergy, turn into yasak . However, Hatherheev replied: "By their faith and law, it is better to die to that lama, than to lose his title as a living being."

After that, the order was canceled and replaced by a new one, in which the supernumerary spiritual was still allowed to be called lamas and the worthiest of them to replace complete places [1] .

During the short rule of Sodnompil Kheterheev (two years), new temples were built in many datsans. Library funds were replenished with new books; for example, in China , 108 volumes of Gandzhur were acquired for the Mongol and Bultumur datsans [2] .

However, Kheterheev failed to preserve the unity of the administration of the Buddhist clergy of Transbaikalia: five datsans on the left bank of the Selenga , headed by Tamchinsky, elected their own Hambo Lama Lubsan-Zhimba Akhaldaev . Five right-bank datsans remained in Kheterheev’s subordination [2] .

Memory

On September 28, 2006, a suburgan was consecrated in Kyakhta district of Buryatia in honor of the second Pandito Khambo-Lama Sodnompil Kheterheev [3] .
