Because of lung disease, Whitehead was supposed to spend the winter of 1882-1883 in Corsica. There he began to collect all kinds of animals and discovered a new species. From 1885 to 1888 Whitehead traveled to Southeast Asia and visited Malacca , North Borneo , Java and Palawan , where he collected a number of new species of animals for science, including the large green hornbeak ( Calyptomena whiteheadi ). Upon returning to his homeland, he described his impressions in a book [5] . From 1893 to 1896, he explored the Philippines, where he again collected many new species, including the Philippine eagle , named by him Pithecophaga jefferyi in memory of his father Jeffrey Whitehead.

Whitehead intended to return to the Philippines in 1899, but was forced to change his plans due to the Spanish-American War . Instead, he went to Hainan Island , where he died of malaria.

Many species of animals are named after Whitehead, for example, the Whitehead Asian trogon ( Harpactes whiteheadi ), Whitehead smoothbill ( Kerivoula whiteheadi ), the tiny Whitehead squirrel ( Exilisciurus whiteheadi ), the Corsican nuthatch ( Sitta whiteheadi ), the Luzon striped rat and whiteheadi ( Ch .)
