Rostock ( The Germ ) is a magazine founded by members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (Brotherhood ): William Holman Hunt , Dante Gabriel Rossetti and his brother William Rossetti . William Rossetti became editor in chief.
This magazine was not particularly successful and was published from January to April 1850 . In total, Aylott & Jones has 4 issues. The name “Sprout” was chosen to show the inseparable connection between Pre-Raphaelite creativity and nature, and, mainly, “Sprout” should have become an escape from which new creative ideas would sprout.
The journal published theoretical articles of pre-Raphaelites, poetry of William Rossetti, Christina Rossetti , Thomas Woolner , James Collinson , artist Walter Deverell , William Scott . The poem “Heavenly Friend” ( Eng. The blessed Damozel ) by Dante Gabriela Rossetti was also written here, written at the time when the author was 19 years old. This work is considered by many to be the best poem by Rossetti. The Rostock also published articles and essays on art and literature written by pre-Raphaelite friends, for example, Madox Brown . Although only four issues of “Sprout” were published, the publication attracted many sympathizers to the side of the artists. The last two issues bore a new name: “Art and Poetry” ( English Art and Poetry: Being Thoughts towards Nature Conducted Principally by Artists ).
