It comes from the owners of the Gilera district in Dagestan (until 1320), whose descendants, upon the adoption of the Orthodox faith, received possession from the Georgian king George V in Kakheti shortly before the dying name of the princes Prupakidze. One of the branches of the family name of the princes Cholokashvili remained in Islam and, under the name of the Sultans of Yelisuy, owned the Yelisuy district until 1843.
Of the princes Cholokashvili are known: Prince Gersevan , whose sister was the wife of the Kakhetian king George II ; in 1518 he hid Levan , the young son of George, from the persecution of King Kartalin king David X. In 1574, Prince Otar rejected a Persian attack on Kakheti by cunning. Prince Barash in 1603 averted the internecine war between the sons of the Kakheti king Alexander II . Prince Shermazan was the tutor of the Kakhetian king Teymuraz I.
