The De Young Museum (also called the De Young Memorial Museum and the MH De Young Memorial Museum ) is an art museum in San Francisco , California , USA , in the Golden Gate Park, part of the San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts museum complex. . Named after its founder, Michael de Young .

The museum collection includes works of the XVII - XXI centuries - foreign contemporary art, textiles, costumes, exhibits from the Americas, the Pacific and Africa.
History
The museum was opened March 24, 1895 as a continuation of the California Midwinter International Exposition held in San Francisco. The building was seriously damaged during the earthquake of 1906 and the museum was closed for a year and a half for repairs. Due to the continuous development of the museum, it required new areas to satisfy the growing number of visitors. Michael de Young responded to this trend and planned a new building, which, according to his assumption, will last until the 20th century . Louis Christian Mullgardt , Architectural Coordinator for the Panama Pacific International Exhibition of 1915, gave the building a plateresque style.
The new structure of the museum was completed in 1919 and transferred by de Young to the city park. In 1921, de Young added some elements to the architecture of the museum, which existed in this form until 2001. For his tremendous efforts to organize the museum, it became known as the Michael de Young Memorial Museum. In the 1920s and 1940s, the building underwent some changes, including those related to salty air from the Pacific Ocean.
The museum building was seriously damaged in the 1989 scrap-Priet earthquake and was replaced in 2005 with a new building. The only remaining original elements of the old de Young building are flowerpots and sphinxes near the pool. The palm trees in front of the building have also been preserved.
