Viktor Moserievich Smirin (1928–2003 [1] ) - Soviet Russian historian and philologist, researcher of ancient history and culture, translator, specialist in ancient Roman history, historian of Roman law. Candidate of Historical Sciences (1955).
The son of the historian M. M. Smirin , brother of the biologist Vl. M. Smirin . He graduated with honors from the history department of the Moscow State University in 1951 [1] .
In 1955, after studying in the graduate school of the department of the history of the ancient world under the leadership of Sergey Lvovich Utchenko, defended his thesis on the dictatorship of Sulla : “The dictatorship of Sulla. (Class essence and historical role) ” [1] .
In his youth, he worked as an editor at the Publishing House of the Academy of Sciences . From 1963 to 2001 he worked at the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR ( Institute of General History ) [1] . An employee of the journal " Herald of Ancient History ", a member of the editorial board.
Translator Libya, Cicero and Theophrastus.
Author of more than 50 works. Editor of many papers [2] .
Hasan Huseynov , who has been friends with him since the late 1970s, recalled that Smirin was "an amazing connoisseur of Russian poetry, a friend of Gasparov and Averintsev ." His favorite poetess was Olga Sedakova [3] [4] .
