MacDonald, Archibald

Archibald MacDonald (McDonnell) (d. C. 1569 ) - 7th chieftain of the Scottish clan MacDonald of Danniveg ( 1565 - 1569 ), eldest son of Sir James MacDonald (d. 1565 ), 6th chieftain of the McDonald clan of Danniveg (1538— 1565), from a marriage with Agness Campbell .

Biography

In May 1565, at the Battle of Glentasy, James MacDonald was defeated by King Tire Eogain Shane O'Neill and was captured along with his younger brother Sorley Boy MacDonald. In July of the same 1565, James MacDonald died in captivity, his eldest son Archibald MacDonald led the MacDonald clan from Danniveg.

On May 5, 1564, Archibald MacDonald received a letter from the Queen of Scotland, Mary Stuart, to own part of the barony of Bar in Kintyre . Archibald MacDonald made an unsuccessful attempt to free his uncle Sorley Boy MacDonald from Irish captivity, who was released by Shane O'Neill in 1567 .

Around 1569, Archibald MacDonald died without leaving children. He was succeeded by his younger brother Angus MacDonald (d. 1614).
