Votto made his debut at the conductor in 1923 in La Scala (La Scala, Manon Lescaut ). He was an assistant to Arturo Toscanini . Constantly worked in La Scala since 1948. He performed at the Arena di Verona festival, at the Edinburgh Festival (1957) [4] .

Votto was a successful conductor, but musicologists sometimes criticize his recordings for lack of emotionality. Some believe that such a dry performance is a feature of studio recordings, since the recordings of live performances by Callas under his control, including the operas Bellini 's Norma (December 1955, La Scala) and Somnambula (1957, Cologne ) are considered outstanding, as and recordings of the operas Gioconda by Ponchielli and Verdi's Masquerade Ball [4] . Votto's pupil Riccardo Muti is a famous conductor, the long-time chief conductor of La Scala [5] .
