Biography

Born November 25, 1932 in Rostov-on-Don in the family of journalists Boris Vakhtin and Vera Panova [1] .

In 1955 he graduated from the Department of Genetics and Breeding of the Biological and Soil Faculty of Leningrad State University with a degree in Darwinism and Genetics [1] .

From 1958 to 1959 he worked at the Biological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR. Since 1959 he worked at the Botanical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences. From 1959 he worked at the Institute of Cytology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, from 1972 to 2006 he headed the laboratory of genetics of cell populations [1] .

In 1972 he defended his doctoral dissertation. Since 1982 - professor. Since 1991 - Academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences [1] .

He performed the main work in the field of genetics of somatic cell populations. Studied epigenetic variability. Created a generalized genetic theory of cell populations. He developed a new concept of aging of a eukaryotic cell, organism and biological species and formed ideas about the genetic homeostasis of a multicellular organism [1] .
