Biography
Hippolyta was born in Mantua on November 13, 1503. She was the daughter of Francesco II, Margrave of Mantua and Isabella d'Este , daughter of Ercole I , Duke of Ferrara, Modena and Reggio and Ricciardi di Saluzzo .
In 1511, Hippolyta entered the monastery of St. Vincent in Mantua, which belonged to the Dominican nuns. In 1518, the princess brought monastic vows and took herself the new name of Libya Hosanna, in honor of the tertiary Dominican nun Hosanna Andreazi , a close friend of her mother.
Significant help to the monastery of St. Vincent was provided by the princess’s brother, Cardinal Ercole Gonzaga , who often visited her. The nun Livia Hosanna, she is the Princess Hippolyta Gonzaga, died on March 16, 1570.
Famous is the portrait of young Hippolyta by Francesco Bonsignori, dated 1515. The painting is stored in the Museum of the Palazzo San Sebastiano in Mantua.
