Biography
Alfonso d'Este was born in Ferrara on March 10, 1527. He was the illegitimate son of the Ferrara and Modena Duke Alfonso I of Laura Dianti .
In 1523, his father transferred the feudal Montecchio to him . In 1532, Alfonso was adopted by Cardinal Innocenzo Chibo, and the next year he was officially recognized by his son and Alfonso I. The Duke indicated in his will that Alfonso and his offspring were granted all the privileges enjoyed by the legitimate members of the house of d'Este.
In 1569, Emperor Maximilian II granted him the title of Margrave Montecchio. He died in Ferrara on November 1, 1587.
Marriages and offspring
Alfonso d'Este was twice married. January 3, 1549 he married with Julia della Rovere (1525-1563), daughter of Francesco Maria I della Rovere , Duke of Urbino , and Eleanor Gonzaga . Four children were born in this marriage:
- Alfonsino d'Este (1560-1578), married with Marfiza d'Este ;
- Cesare d'Este (1562–1628), Duke of Modena and Reggio, Margaret of Montecchio, was married to Virginia Medici ;
- Eleanor d'Este (1561-1637), married with Carlo Gesualdo di Venosa ;
- Hippolyta d'Este (1565-1602), married with Federico II Pico , Prince of Mirandola and Margrave of Concordia.
Widowed, in 1584 Alfonso d'Este again married Violanta Signa , whose marriage was childless.
Margrave Montecchio had an illegitimate son, Alessandro d'Este (1568-1624), who became a cardinal.
