Biography

Maria d'Este was born in Modena on December 8, 1644. She was the daughter of Francesco I, the duke of Modena and Reggio and Maria Catherine Farnese , the daughter of Ranuccio I , the duke of Parma and Piacenza. Since birth, Mary wore the title of Princess of Modena and Reggio. In marriage, she was given the title of Duchess of Parma and Piacenza. She died in Parma on August 20, 1684.

Marriage and Progeny

After the death in 1666 of Isabella d'Este , Duchess of Parma and Piacenza, the widowed Duke of Ranuccio II Farnese (September 17, 1630 - December 11, 1994) married the youngest sister of the deceased wife, Princess Maria. This was his third marriage. Negotiations on the wedding lasted from 16 to 23 October 1667. The marriage ceremony took place on January 16, 1668. In the family of the duke and duchess of nine born children, only three children survived:

  • Princess Isabella Maria Francesca Louise Farnese (12/14/1668 - 07/09/1718), a Benedictine nun at the Monastery of the Virgin Mary of Campana in Piacenza;
  • Princess Victoria Maria Francesca Farnese (12.24.1669 - 15.09.1671), died in infancy;
  • Prince Unknown by name (06.24.1671 - 06.28.1671), died shortly after birth;
  • Princess Victoria Farnese (born and died 19/11/1772), twin, died immediately after birth;
  • Princess Katerina Farnese (born and died on 11/19/1727), twin, died immediately after birth;
  • Prince Unknown by name (born and died 26.12.1674), died immediately after birth;
  • Princess Eleonora Farnese (09/09/1675 - 11/03/1675), died shortly after birth;
  • Prince Francesco Farnese (05/19/1967 - 02.26.1727), Duke of Parma and Piacenza since 1694, was married to Princess Dorothea Sophia of Neuburg (05.07.1670 - 09/15/1748);
  • Prince Antonio Farnese (11.29.1679 - 01.30.1731), the last duke of Parma and Piacenza from the house of Farnese since 1727, was married to Henrietta d'Este (27.05.1702 - 01.30.1777).
