Stage 3

Cyclists shortly after the start of the third stage

The third stage was to go along a route of 168 kilometers in the east direction from Kusset in Allie to the ascent to Mont Bruy in Rhone . During the first 120 kilometers, the riders overcame five categorical climbs, then drove into the mountain range with two ascents to Monbruy, a 3-km climb of 7.7% with the last 1000 meters - 9.3%. [3]

A group of sixteen riders went ahead early. Alexis Gujard (AG2R La Mondiale) attacked with Laurent Didier (Trek – Segafredo) and Alexei Lutsenko (Astana). They were joined by Jesus Errada (Movistar) and Thomas De Gendt (Lotto – Soudal), as the rest of the group was caught by a peloton . [4] The stage took place in cold winter conditions, with an increase in the amount of snow falling and freezing temperatures down to -5 Β° C. At the top of the third climb, there was a food zone where, taking into account climatic conditions, the race becoming too slippery, the race was neutralized. It was originally intended to resume the race after descent from the top, 42 kilometers before the finish. But after a few minutes due to lack of material and technical means for transporting riders, sports directors decided to neutralize the entire stage completely. The results were not taken into account in the general classification, but points for intermediate sprints and mountain bonuses were awarded, which were challenged. [5] [6]
