Biography

The real name of the actress is Dibos. She was born on April 30, 1925 in Paris in a wealthy family. Her mother was a chemist who worked on making Pyrex glass. Calvé studied criminal law at the Sorbonne , but chose the actor's profession as a lawyer. According to the actress, the actors and lawyers need the same qualities - strong character, ability to convince and good voice [4] . Already at the age of 12, Calve made her debut on the screen in a short billiards film. In the postwar years, participated in productions in the theater and on radio, starred in several obscure French films. That was enough to be noticed by American producer Hal Wallis and invited to Hollywood [5] .

Having moved to the USA, Calve signed a contract with Paramount Studio and radically changed her image, becoming a glamorous beauty that she usually embodied on the screen. The first film with her participation, "A rope of sand " was released on screens in 1949. Despite the strong cast ( Bert Lancaster , Claude Raines , Paul Henrade ), the picture was average in all respects, but Calw, the only woman in this line-up, allowed the film to make itself known [5] .

Calvet argued in her memoirs that Wallis was inclining her toward intimacy, and after her refusal she played for the husband of the actress, John Bromfield, with whom the studio terminated the contract. Calve herself got a completely unsuitable role in the comedy “ My Girlfriend Irma Goes to the West ” (1950) with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis . According to Calve, this film ruined her chances of rising as a dramatic actress. In almost all the scenes with her participation partner Corinne was a chimpanzee . Against her wishes, Wallis approved Calve for a role in another Martin and Lewis film - “ Beware the Sailor ” [5] .

Calvet co-starred in two films by the venerable director John Ford , shot at 20th Century Fox : “ When Willie Returns Home ” (1950), in which she played the leader of the French resistance, and “ What is the price of fame ” (1952), where she played the innkeeper’s daughter. Although these works are not among the best in the works of Ford, Calvet, they allowed to preserve the reputation of a dramatic actress. Also on Fox, Calwé co-starred with Danny Kay in “On the Riviera” (1951) [5] .

At Paramount, Calve appeared in a remake of the famous " Shanghai Express " - " Beijing Express " (1951) and the military drama " Thunder in the East " (1952). Then she briefly returned to Europe, starred by Henri Decuen in the French film “ One Step into Eternity .” When the contract with Paramount ended, Calvet moved to Universal's studio, where she starred in two quite successful films: the western The Distant Land (1954) and the musical “ This is Paris ” (1955) [5] .

In 1960, Calvet stated that she was returning to France, tired of the fact that Hollywood producers do not take French actresses seriously [6] . In the 1960s, she starred a little, mainly in television productions. At that time, she was often mentioned in the press in connection with the events of her personal life. In the 1970s, Calvet almost quit her acting career, becoming a therapist, only occasionally she appeared in films and television series as a guest star. In 1982, she appeared on the screen for the last time in the movie “The Sword and the Sorcerer ”. A year later, Calve published a memoir called “Corinne was a good girl?” (Has Corinne Been a Good Girl?), In which she criticized the studio system of Hollywood, where she never managed to fully reveal her acting talent [4] .

Personal life

In 1948, Calvet married her partner in the movie “The Rope of Sand” by John Bromfield . Their marriage ended in divorce in 1954. According to the recollections of the actress, the divorce was due to the fact that Bromfield was obsessed with sex and simply could not sleep without him. Calve's second husband was Jeffrey Stone , also an actor, whom she was married from 1955 to 1960, and from whom she had a son Michael. In the 1960s, Calvet met with married millionaire Donald Scott, who in 1967 filed a lawsuit against her in order to get his money back, which he transferred to the name of the actress so as not to lose them during a divorce. Scott urged the court that the actress with voodoo magic made him give her money. The case, however, was soon resolved outside the court [4] . In 1966, Calve married the producer and director Albert Gunnavey . In 1968, they divorced, and in the same year Calvet married for the fourth time. Her favorite was Robert Wirth, with whom she divorced in 1971.

In 1952, Calve, through the court, demanded a million dollars from actress Zha Zha Gabor . The reason was Gabor’s statement in the press that Calvet is no French, but an Englishwoman who, a couple of years before, did not even speak French [7] . In court, the French origin of the actress was proved [5] .
