The East Asia Summit is an annual forum of leaders of 16 states of East and Southeast Asia . In 2011, membership was expanded to 18 countries and the leaders of the United States and Russia began to be invited to the forum. The first summit was held in Kuala Lumpur , ( Malaysia ) on December 14, 2005 .

The EAC is the main platform for dialogue between leaders of the countries of the Asia-Pacific region on a wide range of political and economic issues of common interest. Meetings in this format are held annually in conjunction with the highest-level ASEAN events.

The forum does not have its own secretariat; its functions are performed by the ASEAN Secretariat, located in Jakarta (Indonesia). All decisions at the summits are taken by consensus .

18 EAC countries account for over 50% of the world's population and about 55% of total GDP .

YOU Activities

VAS core areas of work include cooperation in the following areas: finance, energy and environmental protection, emergency response, healthcare, education, regional interconnectedness.

Every year, meetings of ministers and senior officials of the EAC countries are held in the relevant areas of cooperation.

Energy Collaboration

The main principles and directions of energy cooperation within the framework of the EAC are formulated in the Declaration on Energy Security in East Asia adopted at the 2nd EAC Summit (2007).

The document sets goals to improve the efficiency and environmental friendliness of fuel use, reduce dependence on traditional energy sources, reduce carbon dioxide emissions, increase energy efficiency of production through hydropower and civil nuclear energy, expand non-state investments in the development of energy resources and create appropriate infrastructure, create open and competitive regional and international markets providing affordable raw materials for all levels economics.

The Declaration on Climate Change, Energy and the Environment, adopted at the 3rd EAC Summit (2007), provides for measures aimed at continuing to reduce energy consumption and reduce the energy intensity of production, encouraging research, development and diffusion of technologies to expand energy efficiency in key sectors of the economy.

Regional interconnectedness

At the 8th EAC Summit in 2013, it was decided to support the EAC participating countries in implementing the ASEAN Master Plan for Interconnectivity (Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity).

Counterterrorism

In 2017, Russia initiated the adopted Statement of the EAC leaders on the fight against the ideological challenges of terrorism, terrorist ideas and propaganda. In development of this direction, in 2018, a Statement of the EAC leaders on countering the threat of foreign terrorist fighters and returnees was adopted.
