Creating an Award
The establishment of the award in February 2011 was announced by Pierre Leroy, a bibliophile and manuscript collector, a member of the Medici Award jury and one of the managers of the Lagardère SCA media group [1] . In May of the same year, he was expelled from the jury of the Medici Award, because, according to the writer Dominic Fernandez , the establishment of a prize for him, which is going to judge other awards, is incompatible with the jury membership of one of them [2] .
The scandal in the “little world of the big autumn jury” and Leroy's statement about the prejudice against him by the “mandarins” who expelled him from the literary “seral” because he was not a writer [3] , mocked the press and fueled the interest of the public.
Award of literary prizes is awarded to an author selected from among the winners of eight main autumn prizes:
- Grand Prize of the French Academy for the novel
- December award
- Femina Prize
- Flora Prize
- Goncourt Prize
- Inter-Union Prize
- Medici Award
- Renodo Prize
The first winner of the award, presented in mid-December, was Emmanuel Carrière with the novel “Limonov” about the life of the Russian oppositionist and libertine Eduard Limonov [4] .
In 2016, the historian Ivan Jablonka , the Medici laureate, won the award for the book “Letizia, or End of People” - reflection on the fate of 18-year-old Letizia Perret, kidnapped and killed in January 2011 near his dwelling in Pornic, released from prison by the multi-recidivist Tony Meion [5] .
