Pratt & Whitney R-985

The Pratt & Whitney R-985 Wasp Junior is a 9-cylinder aircraft radial piston air-cooled engine manufactured by Pratt & Whitney from the 1930s to the 1950s. The designation “R-985” in the label means “radial engine with a volume of 985 cubic inches,” which corresponds to a volume of 16.1 liters. The first versions gave out power of 300 hp (220 kW), later 450 hp engines became widely used. (340 kW)

Wasp Junior installed on many small civilian and military aircraft, including small transporters, general aviation, training aircraft, agricultural aircraft and helicopters. A total of 39,000 engines were built, many of which are still in operation today.

Wasp junior b4

Wasp Junior SC-G
525 l. with. at 2700 rpm at an altitude of 2900 m, 600 l. with. at 2850 rpm during takeoff. Experimental version with increased power and reduced gear screw.
