Leroux was born in the family of the leader of a military orchestra. He studied at the Paris Conservatory with Jules Massenet and Theodore Dubois . In 1985 he received the Roman Prize for the cantata "Endymion".
From 1896 he taught harmony and composition at the Paris Conservatory, was a member of the Musical Council of the Academy of Arts, which awarded the Roman Prize.
Leroux composed several orchestral and choral works, songs, piano pieces, but gained fame primarily through operas.
