Biography
Born into the family of the sculptor Yasutaki Funakoshi. In 1971-1975 he studied at the University of Art and Design, from 1975 to 1977 - at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music.
He lives and works in Tokyo . The wooden sculptures of Funakosi are made of camphor wood in the medieval technique of carving (“Madonna and Child”, 1977); these are mainly half-length generalized portraits of life-size allegories (“Portrait of My Wife”, 1981; “The Moon Runs”, 1995). At the same time, it leaves visible both the structure of the wood and the traces of the thread, part of the head of the sculpture is unpainted.
Exhibited at the Venice Biennale (1988), the Art Biennale in São Paulo (1989), Sydney (1992), the documenta IX exhibition in Kassel (1992), the Shanghai Biennale (2000), and his works are presented in several art museums in Japan and other countries.
