Biography
Eugenie Wallen was born in Montaglio Versier ( Isère , France ). She studied at the Lyon Conservatory, then in Paris, intending to become a chamber singer. In 1911, Wallen made her debut in Paris, performing a solo part in the cantata of Claude Debussy, “The Chosen Maiden”. After this performance, Debussy invited Wallen to perform the part of the heavenly voice at the world premiere of the Mystery “ Martyrdom of St. Sebastian ”. Wallen's collaboration with Debussy continued at the premiere of “Three Poems by Mallarmé” in Paris in 2014, accompanied by the composer. Wallen beautifully performed the romances of contemporary composers - Ana , Nin-Kulmelya (accompanied by the authors), Russell , Foret , Dupark , Chausson , de Falla's songs. In French, she sang the lieder of Schubert and Strauss .
Wallen first appeared on the opera stage, after much persuasion, in 1912: she sang to Michaela (“ Carmen ”), Mimi (“ Bohemia ”), Clara (“ ” Leroux ) at the Opera Comedian , title part in Charpentier's “ ”. The opera-comedian Wallen went on stage for several decades, and performed in other theaters. In 1916, she sang Margarita ( Faust ) at the Colon Theater in Buenos Aires and regularly returned to this scene until 1935. She performed in La Scala (1916-1917), Rome (1917), in 1920 she played the role of Thais ( "Thais" ) at the Paris Opera , and in 1934 she sang in the opera of San Francisco .
Ninon Wallen in the best way demonstrated the features of his talent in lyrical and coloratura parties. In her repertoire, Juliet (“ Romeo and Juliet ”), Margarita (“Faust”), , Melisande (“ Pelleas and Melisande ”) and three heroines of the opera “ Tales of Hoffmann ” coexisted with Zerlina (“ Don Juan ” ) and Countess (" The Wedding of Figaro "). However, Wallen's crown roles were Manon , Louise and Charlotte ( Werther ).
Wallen loved the French operetta and participated in productions of the works of Lecock , Masset and Chabrier , and in the 1930s even performed in the music hall. In 1937, she starred in the movie " ".
Ninon Wallen had a wide range, her well-balanced lyrical soprano was strong in the middle and lower registers, which allowed her to play the role of Carmen . At the peak of her career, Wallen could also sing high color parts in the operas of Bellini and Donizetti . Critics characterized her style as the embodiment of not only good singing, but also good taste. Wallen's vocal career was extremely long-lived: at the age of 60, she sang the Countess in The Wedding of Figaro, continued to perform and record in the 1950s.
Wallen was a visiting professor at the Conservatory in Montevideo from 1953 to 1959. The singer died in 1961 on her estate La Sauvagère near Lyon.
Records
During her career from 1913 to the 1950s, Ninon Wallen recorded many 78 rpm records, later they were reissued on CD. The recordings mainly include opera arias, vocal works of French composers, and there are also full or abbreviated recordings of operas. The 1931 recording of Wasser’s opera by Massenet in the Opera Comic with directed by Eli Cohen, is considered one of the best recordings of Werther [5] .
